Streaflow Rehabilitation Assistance Program (StRAP) Grant
The county accepted $1.63 million to clear woody debris and stabilize stream banks at 19 sites, mostly on landowner requests after Hurricane Helene. Work runs through October 2028.
Beaver Management Assistance Program
The county pays $6,000 a year for a program that removes problem beavers and dams, getting about $12,600 in services in return. The trapper completed four jobs this year and saves landowners an estimated $11,300 in damages.
Landfill engineering services contract
The board was to consider approving an engineering services contract for the county landfill — a behind-the-scenes item with real environmental and cost implications.
Charlotte interbasin transfer threatens Catawba River basin
Charlotte Water wants to pull up to 63 million gallons a day out of the Catawba River — water that won't come back. Local officials worry that during a drought, Lake James (the region's biggest reservoir) gets drained to prop up downstream users, and future growth here could be blocked. A state moratorium runs until March 2027 while a UNC study develops recommendations.
Roadside litter and community beautification
The county's litter program collects about 1,500 pounds a month, but Commissioner Stroud pressed for stronger enforcement against illegal dumping beyond the current citation process.
