Alexander Tax Foreclosure Reimbursement Request
A local couple paid all tax bills they received, but the tax office never transferred parcels into their name after a 2016 purchase — then sued them for foreclosure. They paid $5,944 to save their property and are asking the county to refund $2,607 in interest, penalties and attorney fees.
2027 Property Revaluation
Property values are being reassessed for 2027, with residential values running about 31.5 percent below 2023 assessed levels. Doing the revaluation in-house saves roughly $1 million versus hiring a firm, and a public hearing on the schedule of values is expected in November.
Hochoka tiny-house tax exemption dispute
The Hochoka horse rescue nonprofit and its supporters filled public comment demanding the county settle its lawsuit, answer eight written questions, and process the low-to-moderate-income tax exemption for its tiny homes. The board could not respond due to pending litigation.
Community grant-making process redesign
The county has $550,000 set aside for community grants this year and is streamlining the process with a short letter-of-interest first, instead of heavy full applications up front. Priority areas: recovery housing, family caregiver support, faith community engagement, and prevention/youth.
Spark family-centered treatment and foster care costs
Spark's first year: 46 referrals, 107 residents served, 12 families completed, and 85% of random drug screens negative. Medicaid coverage is being pursued, which would free grant funds for uninsured families.
Finance department leadership transition
Longtime finance director Margaret Pierce is leaving for Blowing Rock; the board appointed Chandler Baumgarner as interim director and Ethan Bumgarner as deputy to keep the county's books on solid footing.
HR 1 food assistance cost shifts to counties
New federal rules cut county SNAP admin funding by 25% starting October and could make counties pay part of benefit costs if error rates stay above 6%. North Carolina's error rate is down under 7% but not yet compliant.
FY 2026-2027 Budget Adoption
The county's recommended budget for next fiscal year gets its required public hearing and adoption vote June 15. It's been out for public inspection on the county website, at the library, and at the senior center.

Travis Isaacs, a 14-year veteran of the state Department of Revenue, was appointed and sworn in as Burke County's tax administrator. Only about 112 people statewide hold the required certification, and he passed the exam on his first try.
